ABOUT

Our first taste of Mersea Island was about eight years ago when our two children; Erin and Oscar were babies. We wanted (needed!) to get away for a weekend by the sea, but without a long haul from our home in Bushey, Herts - because as you know, long car treks and babies are not a great combination.

As a pair of born and bred Northerners who’d ventured down South, we didn’t even have an idea as to where the nearest coast was, so we pored over a map, decided we couldn’t face the hustle and bustle of Southend and should give Mersea Island a try because it was only around an hour and 40 minutes (probably two hours from central London). We found it had rustic charm, amazing seafood, a village atmosphere, a slower pace of life and was a world away from what we were used to. We promptly fell in love with the place and have been going back ever since.

When Erin and Oscar were younger they loved Colchester Zoo which is just a short drive away, it kept them entertained and happy for whole days at a time. As they’ve got older, we’ve been taking more of an interest in sporting activities. Jonathan has taken part in a Triathlon on the island and we’ve both completed the Round the Island Running Race. Our kids simply can’t get enough swimming, sea kayaking or crabbing from the jetty and especially enjoy keeping an eye open for Sammy the Seal.

Our long-held dream, once we discovered the Island, was to have our own place there. We talked about it a lot, although we always knew it was only wishful thinking. But then we were lucky enough to inherit some money from a lovely relative. With the help of our families, the dream suddenly turned into a strong possibility and then a wonderful reality.

Our family has enjoyed so many wonderfully happy times on the island, we hope yours will too. Come and visit, see if you think we’re right.

Reviews

"Woodbine cottage is perfect for exploring the hidden gem Mersea island is. A fantastic place filled with friendly people and plenty to do. The cottage itself is modern but comfortable. The rooms are tastefully decorated with everything you might need for your holiday. We, especially enjoyed the garden, large enough for the kids to run around while we enjoyed a relaxing bbq. We will definitely be returning thanks to Helen & Jono for being such welcoming hosts."

"We stayed at Woodbine cottage for a weekend in September and absolutely loved it! Helen is a great host providing easy directions as well as accommodating a slightly later check-out on the Sunday. The cottage is really nice and clean and benefits from a brand new kitchen and bathroom. The back garden is great and well equipped with seating, table and outdoor lights. The location is perfect within a short walk of shops, restaurants and the beach. The cottage has lots of atmosphere and we just felt at home from the moment we arrived. Hopefully we’ll be able to stay in this cosy cottage again!"

"We stayed at Woodbine Cottage with our 5 year old in December, and had a fantastic weekend. Really appreciated the good info from the host Helen in advance of arriving. Cottage is lovely and well fitted out with all you need, and we really appreciated the log burner in the lounge area to cosy up to at night (shame it was too chilly to explore the massive garden). The location is perfect with shops just around the corner and it’s still just a stroll to get down to the coast line where we enjoyed some lovely fresh seafood. Don’t forget the check their weather reading stone on the tree as you head out!"
